The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, Nyombi Thembo, has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting veteran Ugandan musicians through medical care, housing support and industry revitalisation efforts.
Speaking after meeting legendary Kadongo Kamu artist Hadijah Namale, Thembo said the commission recognises the critical role local musicians and filmmakers play in driving Uganda’s digital economy and cultural identity.
“In this digital era, music and short films are the heartbeat of our social media. At UCC, we know that nurturing local content is vital for a thriving digital economy,” Thembo said.
He described Namale as one of Uganda’s most influential traditional musicians whose music has shaped the country’s entertainment industry since the 1960s.
Thembo said UCC, under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme, is working to ensure that the veteran singer receives specialised medical treatment and improved living conditions.
He added that the initiative is not only focused on welfare support but also on restoring dignity and recognition to veteran artists who helped build Uganda’s music industry.
The campaign will be spearheaded through the “Ataakulaba Music Launch,” a fundraising event scheduled for July 31, 2026 at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.
According to Thembo, proceeds from the event will support the construction of a house for Namale and provide assistance to another veteran musician, Dan Mugula.
He said the initiative seeks to create a sustainable future for Ugandan music while inspiring younger creatives to value and preserve the country’s artistic heritage.
Several veteran musicians attended the meeting with Thembo, with UCC describing the engagement as part of broader efforts to promote and protect Uganda’s creative industry.
